What is Lutein?
Lutein (LOO-teen) is a naturally occurring carotenoid vitamin. It is a deep yellow compound, made by plants in order to help absorb light from the sun and turn it into energy, as part of the photosynthesis process. Animals can only obtain this vital nutrient by eating plants.
Lutein is also found in high concentrations at the back of the eye in the macular pigment and is believed to help protect the macula against oxidative stress and visible blue light.

Lutein has long been associated with eye health gaining the title “the eye vitamin” which is mostly as a result of its significant antioxidant properties. Lutein appears to help neutralise the harmful effects of free radicals within the eye, which can potentially damage or even destroy cells within the retina.
Lutein forms part of the macular pigment which helps to protect the eye by absorbing damaging visible blue light, found in sunlight, car headlights, television screens and computer devices. Where can I find it organically?
Good natural sources of Lutein are found in leafy green vegetables such as kale, spinach, chard and lettuce. As the vegetable deteriorates the yellow of the Lutein starts to become visible.
Lutein can however be found in a wide range of other green, yellow or red fruit and vegetables including peas, broccoli, red and yellow peppers, bananas, okra, celery, tomatoes, carrots, melons and grape fruit to name just a few. Egg yolks have also been shown to contain a significant concentration of Lutein.

While nutritionists agree that Lutein is an essential vitamin and should form part of a healthy balanced diet, there are as yet no recommended daily allowance (RDA).
